  • 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced celery
  • 2/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1 package of pre-sliced 8-ounce mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoons of beef base (different from beef broth; it’s a base to make beef stock)
  • 8-10 cups of water
  • 1 large bay leaf
  • 1 cup pearl barley
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Step-by-Step Instructions for Preparing the Recipe

  1. Brown the beef in a nonstick skillet, stirring frequently to ensure even cooking.

  3. Add the carrots, celery, onion, mushrooms, beef base, water, garlic, and bay leaf to the slow cooker.
  4. Cook over high heat for one hour. Then, add the pearl barley, reduce the heat to low, and continue to cook until the vegetables and beef are tender.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remember to discard the bay leaf before serving.

Tips for Success

  • Ensure the beef is cut into uniform pieces for even cooking.
  • For a richer flavor, consider searing the beef until it’s well-browned.
  • Adjust the seasoning to your preference, adding more salt or pepper if needed.

Additional Tips or Variations

  • Feel free to add other vegetables like potatoes or peas for more variety.
  • If you prefer a thicker soup, reduce the amount of water slightly or add more barley.
  • For a vegetarian version, replace the beef with additional mushrooms and use vegetable broth.

  1. The barley has no measurement, I went according to the package and added 1 cup. It soaked up all the broth, so I added more water and spices. Also, it took 45 minutes for the barley to cook, so my veggies were overdone.we had to order pizza tonight. Next time I will add the barley and cook for 30 minutes before adding the veggies.

  2. there is also no measurement for garlic. i left it out. i think you need to go back over your recipes and fix them TTT
